Why Ethiopia Needs Us

Ethiopia has just 1 doctor for every 40,000 people — compared to 1 per 300 in the United States. UNICEF estimates that 94% of rural Ethiopians have no access to healthcare whatsoever.

In the cities, 42% of people still lack access to basic medical care. For families in the Harari region, a simple illness can become a death sentence — not because treatments don't exist, but because they can't reach them.

That's why Siloam Ethiopia exists. We bridge the gap between need and care, one patient at a time.

Our Founder

Wegayehu Ketema

Born and raised in a one-room house in Harar, Ethiopia, Wegayehu was raised by her grandmother. As a young girl, a neighbor ruptured her eardrum in an act of violence. She received no medical treatment — for ten years.

It wasn't until she traveled to India that she finally had surgery to repair the damage. That decade of suffering planted a seed: she vowed to become a nurse and return to Harar to build a free clinic, so no child would endure what she had.

After moving to the United States and becoming a nurse, Wegayehu co-founded Siloam Ethiopia. Today, the Siloam Ethiopia Medium Clinic serves over 800 community members every month — completely free of charge.
